Taking part in volunteer work in South Africa, supporting wildlife conservation and local communities, can be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to learn, explore, and contribute to meaningful conservation work in the African bush.

Volunteer Activities 

During the programme, volunteers may participate in a variety of activities depending on conservation needs and the time of year.

Wildlife Monitoring

Monitoring wildlife plays a vital role in conservation efforts. Volunteers may assist with:

  • Monitoring cheetahs, rhinos, and elephants

  • Herd health assessments and population monitoring

  • Night monitoring activities

Farm and Habitat Maintenance

Maintaining the reserve and surrounding environment is essential for healthy ecosystems. Activities may include:

  • Clearing paths and bush

  • Removing alien invasive vegetation

  • Assisting with general farm maintenance

Camera Trapping

Camera traps are an important research tool used to monitor wildlife presence and behaviour.

Volunteers may assist with:

  • Setting up bush cameras in strategic areas

  • Collecting and reviewing footage

  • Identifying species captured on camera

Anti-Poaching Support

Poaching remains one of the greatest threats to wildlife. Volunteers may assist with:

  • Fence patrols

  • Snare removal

  • Observing and reporting potential threats to wildlife

Animal Feeding

Volunteers may assist with feeding animals on the farm while learning about their dietary needs and care.

Bush Trails & Night Drives

Experience the magic of the African bush both during the day and at night.

  • Guided bush walks to learn about tracks, plants, and wildlife behaviour

  • Night drives to observe nocturnal animals and experience the sounds of the bush after dark

Community Outreach

Supporting local communities is an important part of conservation. Volunteers may assist with outreach initiatives and donations.

Items such as pencils, colouring books, crayons, blankets, and toys are always welcome contributions for local community projects.

Vehicle Patrols

Patrols help conservation teams monitor wildlife and detect potential issues within the reserve. Activities may include:

  • Locating and mapping injured animals

  • Monitoring herd movements

  • Assessing and counting calves

Animal Relocation

Occasionally animals may escape or need to be moved for conservation purposes. Volunteers may assist with relocation efforts under professional supervision.
